Phyllis Malone Hardy English

Mrs. Phyllis Malone Hardy English, age 67 of Lula, passed away on Saturday, December 4, 2021. 

Born in Gainesville, Georgia on March 15, 1954, she was a daughter of the late Homer Hardy, Jr. and Eunice Harvey Hardy. She was a devoted wife and loving mother. She graduated from East Hall High School and later attended both Lanier Technical School and Gainesville College. Mrs. English was the first Black woman elected to the Lula City Council. She was retired from Standard Telephone Company in Cornelia, Georgia and also retired from Gainesville Municipal Court.  Mrs. English was currently serving as the Director for the Lanier Boys and Girls Club in Lula, Georgia. Over the span of her life, she taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and was very active in all the Church activities. Mrs. English was a member of the Springfield Missionary Baptist Church in Lula, Georgia. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, politics, shopping and most of all spending time with her family.  

Survivors include her loving husband of 36 years, Henry Ellis English of Lula; daughters, Dr. Monica Hudson Cook and Brea English, both of Demorest; sister, Deborah Turner of Athens; special nephew, Edward Turner; special nephew and spouse, Eric and Jasmine Turner; long time best friends, Darlene Coleman, Mary Glenn, Myra Stowers Evans, Donna Martin Carpenter and Sharon Sanders Natividad, along with a host of brothers-in-laws, sisters-in-laws, other relatives and friends.  

Funeral service is scheduled for 1:00 pm on Saturday, December 11, 2021, in the Chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart with Rev. Arthur Jones officiating. Interment will follow in the Level Grove Cemetery. 

The family will receive friends from 5-7 on Friday, December 10, 2021, at the funeral home.

Erskine Ellis Parks, Jr.

Erskine Ellis Parks, Jr., age 96, of Demorest, passed away on Wednesday, November 24, 2021. 

Born on July 12, 1925, in Ocala, Florida, he was the son of the late Erskine Ellis Parks, Sr. and Rubye Mae Aylward Parks. Mr. Parks was a self-employed carpenter. He was a United States Merchant Marine and Veteran of World War II. Mr. Parks was a member of the American Legion and enjoyed going to the VFW. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine Smith Parks; son, John Parks; and sister, Jackie Parks. 

Survivors include his daughters and son-in-law, Katherine Parks Orear of Demorest and Faye and Mike DeSerio of Greer, SC and 14 grandchildren. 

Mr. Parks was laid to rest next to his wife, Katherine, at Highland Memorial Park in Ocala, Florida. 

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, December 11, 2021, in the Chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart with Rev. John Umberhant officiating.

Terry Grant Funk

Terry Grant Funk, age 61 of Homer, passed away on Wednesday, December 1, 2021. 

Born in Sylva, North Carolina on October 3, 1960, he was a son of Mary Cochran Funk of Cornelia and the late Ralph Franklin Funk. Terry was the owner/ operator of Controlled Electrical Systems. He was a devoted husband and father and loved spending time with family and friends, as well as his dog Dingo. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing and hunting, especially on his safaris to Africa. Terry was a member of Damascus Baptist Church and the Mt. Airy Masonic Lodge #141 F&AM of Mt. Airy, Georgia. 

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Broadus Martin. 

In addition to his mother, survivors include his loving wife of 41 years, Robin Martin Funk of Homer; son and daughter-in-law, Grant & Ashley Funk of Lula; brothers and sister-in-law, Timmy & Lettie Funk of Bradenton, Florida and Todd Funk of Cornelia; sister, Susan Metz of Anderson, South Carolina; mother-in-law, Betty Martin of Homer; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Kathy & Donald Pruitt of Homer; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bobby & Susan Martin of Homer; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. 

A graveside service is scheduled for 11 am, Saturday, December 4, 2021 at Damascus Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Austin Kelley officiating and Masonic Rights provided by the Mt. Airy Masonic Lodge #141 F&AM.

Lori Ann Owens Thompson

Lori Ann Owens Thompson, age 63 of Demorest, passed away on Sunday, November 28, 2021. 

Born in Hialeah, Florida on August 20, 1958, she was the daughter of the late Francis Patrick and Elizabeth Ann Smith Owens. Mrs. Thompson served the Banks County area for 20 years as a paramedic. During this time she also was an EMS and Fire Instructor at North Georgia Technical College and a volunteer firefighter with the City of Demorest. She was also medic in the film industry and currently was the regional Health and Safety Supervisor for Netflix productions. Her impact even reached Nigeria, where she taught emergency care to the local healthcare professionals. In her spare time, Mrs. Thompson loved being outdoors and spending time with her family and friends. She loved animals and would sponsor animals in need and was a huge supporter in the Hands for Paws organization. 

Surviving are her loving husband of 43 years, Melvin Thompson of Demorest; son and daughter-in-law, James & Emily Thompson of Asheville; daughter and son-in-law, Sarah Thompson Herold & Ken Herold of Cleveland; grandchildren, Coen, Griffin, Garrett and Dahlia; brother, Michael Owens of Greensboro, North Carolina; niece, Rebekah Owens Brown; countless other family and friends. 

The family will plan a Celebration of Life in the near future.

Amanda Ann Jones Kelley

Amanda Ann Jones Kelley, age 81, of Clarkesville, passed away on Friday, November 26, 2021. 

Born on November 12, 1940, in Franklin County, she was a daughter of the late Jess C. and Agnes Faye Hembree Jones. She enjoyed gardening, being with family, her puzzle books, the Senior Center, and donating to St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Mrs. Kelley was a member of the Red Hatters and Silver Sneakers. Mrs. Kelley was of the Holiness faith. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Kelley; sons: Larry Gene Kelley, James Earl Kelley, and Johnny Lee Kelley; daughter, Brenda Lee Newsome; sons-in-law, Darryl Wilson and Ricky Southers; granddaughter, Lori Kelley; and 16 brothers and sisters.  

Survivors include her sons and daughter-in-law, Johnny and Teresa Kelley of Mt. Airy; son, Timothy McCluskey; daughters and son-in-law: Colleen Hyde of Cornelia, Ruby Wilson of Summerville, SC, Arlene and Tim Chitwood of Clarkesville, and Robin Kelley of Lula; 17 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild. 

Funeral services are scheduled for 1:00 pm on Wednesday, December 1, 2021, in the Chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart with Rev. John Reeser officiating. Interment will follow in Leatherwood Baptist Church Cemetery. 

The family will receive friends from 10:00 am until the service hour on Wednesday at the funeral home.

John Marion "Turtle" Watkins

John Marion “Turtle” Watkins, age 71, of Lula, passed away on Saturday, November 27, 2021. 

Born on September 7, 1950, in Demorest, he was a son of the late John Lamon and Avis Dodd Watkins. He was a United States Army Veteran having proudly served during the Vietnam Conflict. Mr. Watkins was a member of the Grant Reeves VFW Post #7720 and the Habersham County American Legion Post #84. He worked with Stephens Trucking, enjoyed doing mechanics, loved fishing, and was a jack of all trades. Turtle loved his family and was of the Christian faith.  

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Trenna “Tinker” McGee Watkins. 

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Cody and Kayla Watkins of Lula; daughter, Mercedes Angel of Homer; grandchildren, Mea Angel and Emalee Davis; brother, Anthony Watkins of Demorest; nephew, Collin; and niece, Claire. 

The family will receive friends from 5-8 pm on Tuesday, November 30, 2021, at McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home. 

A private family service will be held with burial to follow.

Mary Webb Martin Kitchens

Mary Webb Martin Kitchens, age 67, of Alto, passed away on Saturday, November 27, 2021. 

Born on August 15, 1954, in Clayton, she was a daughter of the late Grover Webb, Sr. and Lucy Henslee Webb. Mrs. Kitchens retired from Ethicon and was a member of Crossroads Baptist Church. She was a faithful supporter of St. Jude and loved her dogs and cat. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Alton Gene Martin; second husband, Billy Joe Kitchens; daughter, Teresa Martin; and brother, Grover Webb, Jr. 

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Peggy and Pop Thomas of Cleveland and Carolyn and Kimble Ledford of Dahlonega; eight grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law: Calvin and Cindy Webb of Cornelia, Freddy and Vickie Webb of Clayton, Ronnie and Ann Webb of Cornelia, and Jimmy and Karen Webb of Clarkesville; sister, Clara Webb Tumlin of Alto; sister-in-law, Dorothy “Dot” Webb of Tiger; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Cameron Hunter Storms

Cameron Hunter Storms, age 22, of Buford, passed away on Tuesday, November 23, 2021. 

Cameron was born on March 5, 1999, in Scottsdale, Arizona. At the age of 16, he began his own social media empire by starting up and selling web pages all while working in the family business. He was loved by many and cared for more, especially his cat. 

Survivors include his wife, Alexis Sanders Storms; father, Sean Storms; mother, Renee Walker Storms; brothers, Austin Storms and Dallas Storms; sisters: Dakota Storms, Arizona Storms, and Abigail Storms; paternal grandparents, Rob and Pamela Ray; maternal grandmother, Patti Wallin; and maternal grandfather, Dennis Walker. 

A celebration of life service will be held later.

Alma Wiley Crane

Alma Wiley Crane, age 90, of Lula, passed away on Friday, November 26, 2021. 

Born on April 3, 1931, in Hall County, she was a daughter of the late Jack and Pauline Pittman Armour. Mrs. Crane worked at Mt. Vernon Mills for a number of years and was owner and operator of Country Craft and Flowers. She was a member of Christian Baptist Church. Mrs. Crane enjoyed reading her Bible, singing, gospel music, flowers, crafts, quilting, sewing, and crocheting. She loved spending time with her family and friends, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. 

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her first husband, Buford Wiley, Jr.; second husband, Daniel Crane; twin sister, Thelma Brock; and sisters: Elizabeth Wade Couch, Louise Oliver, and Susie Stancil. 

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Jeanette and Pete Dodd of Alto and Janice and Tommy Gibson of Hollywood; grandchildren: Brandy Dodd Barrett, Jamie Dodd Panell (Brian), and Brian Westmoreland; great-grandchildren: Chantz Oliver, Cheyenne Oliver, Colton Dodd, and Aubree Westmoreland; brothers: J.B. Armour, James Armour, and L.D. Armour, all of Alto; and a number of special nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. 

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 pm on Saturday, November 27, 2021, in the Chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart with Rev. Donnie Wilkes officiating. Interment will follow in Living Mission United Methodist Church Cemetery. 

The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until the service hour on Saturday at the funeral home.

John B. "J.B." Stephens

John B. “J.B.” Stephens, age 90, of Alto, passed away on Wednesday, November 24, 2021. 

Born on September 27, 1931, in Bogart, he was a son of the late Gaynell Stephens Bailey. Mr. Stephens worked at Propes Furniture for several years where he was a piano technician that tuned and rebuilt pianos. He also worked with Fieldale Farms and later retired from Deep South. He enjoyed NASCAR and drag racing, but most of all, he enjoyed Horseshoes, in which he won the State Championship five times. Mr. Stephens was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church in Gainesville/Oakwood. 

In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his infant son, Jeffrey Scott Stephens and great-grandson, Caden Tolbert. 

Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law: Bonnie and Jerry Luke of Cornelia, Connie and Jimmy Shirley of Mt. Airy, and Hope and David Kelley of Baldwin; grandchildren: Josh Luke (Meg), Zach Luke (Marissa), Brittany Hanes (Joshua), Jason Shirley (Cassie), Paige Wheeler (Justin); and great-grandchildren: Lily, Benjamin, Nolan, Cooper, Cy, Beckett, and Asher. 

Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 am on Monday, November 29, 2021, in the Chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart with Rev. Clarence Reynolds and Pastor Kenny Kilby officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Baptist Church Cemetery, 3723 Old Flowery Branch Road, Oakwood, Georgia 30566. 

The family will receive friends from 4-8 pm on Sunday, November 28, 2021, at the funeral home.

Margie Nell Taylor Thomas

Margie Nell Taylor Thomas, age 82 of Mt. Airy, passed away on Monday, November 15, 2021. 

Born on February 13, 1939, she was a daughter of the late Marvin and Blondine Leckie Taylor. Mrs. Thomas loved her family especially her grandchildren. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Thomas. 

Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Mitchell Earl & Stephanie Thomas of Clarkesville, Danny Eric & Regina Thomas of Alto; daughter and son-in-law, Vicky Ann & Danny Thomason of Cleveland; 9 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; brother, Edwin Taylor of Monroe; sisters, Carolyn Shirley of Demorest, Mary Taylor and Linda Luke both of Cornelia, and Brenda Ridley of Cleveland; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. 

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 pm, Wednesday, November 17, 2021 in the Chapel of McGahee-Griffin and Stewart with Rev. Thomas Gragg officiating. Interment will follow in Yonah Memorial Gardens.
